TEXAS’ controversial high school steroid testing program could be seeing its last days, as an Associated Press report showed that the mammoth price tag has not produced the results the plan had originally envisioned.
Barely 0.25 percent of the 62,892 tests produced positive results, according to a UIL report (via the Sunset Advisory Commission). Only 190 positive results (0.27 percent) were found since the program began in the spring of 2008, a brutally low percentage considering the program had cost taxpayers $9.3 million since its inception.
The commission suggested that the program be discontinued, which would save more than $500,000 a year.
There were 2,633 tests in the 2013-14 school year, with 2,405 boys from 10 different sports and 228 girls from 10 different sports, a total which involved 172 high schools. The vast majority of boys tested came from football, where 1,112 players (46.2 percent) came from the sport, while multiple sport athletes came in second with 620 (25.7 percent).
Of the girls tested, 58 (25.8 percent) came from multiple sport athletes, while 47 (20.9 percent) came from volleyball.
From that total, only two players (.00075959 percent) tested positive. Ten players came back with inconclusive tests, while seven came back with protocol positives.
Mandated by Senate Bill 8, which was passed by the 80th Texas Legislature, the testing could come to a quiet end, with summer the earliest possible time.
