ON THE FIELD with Brandon C. Williams

Today, Sunday: With the Texans having played on Thursday night, the stage belongs to the Astros, who close out a weekend set against Seattle Mariners beginning at 1:10pm. Houston fans will finally get their first look at Justin Verlander in an Astros uniform as the ace makes his debut in Minute Maid Park since being traded from Detroit Tigers on August 31. Verlander has won both starts for Houston, with his most recent an eight-inning gem at Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday where he allowed just one hit while striking out nine. Overall, Verlander is 12-8 this season with a 3.58 ERA.

The Mariners will counter with rookie Andrew Moore, who comes into the game with a 1-3 record and 5.36 ERA. AT&T Sportsnet starts its coverage with the pregame show at 12:30pm.

Tomorrow, Monday: The day is filled with junior high football and volleyball action across the area. Among the teams participating will be Texas City Blocker Middle School, whose seventh grade football team welcomes Alvin Junior High to Stingaree Stadium for games at 5:00pm and 6:15pm.

Blocker’s seventh grade volleyball teams also welcome Alvin Junior High for matches that begin at 5:00pm and 6:00pm.

Tuesday: As usual, the evening is filled with a near-full slate of volleyball matches, as La Marque is the only area team not in action. The evening begins 6:00pm with Clear Lake at Clear Brook, Clear Springs at Clear Falls, Alvin at Dickinson and Fort Bend Elkins at Galveston Ball. Three matches begin at 6:30pm as Clear Creek visits Friendswood, Manvel at Santa Fe and Fort Bend Marshall at Texas City. Rice at Hitchcock rounds out the schedule beginning at 7:00pm.

Texas City’s tennis team travels to Manvel to face their district 23-5a rival, with the first matches starting at 3:30pm.

La Marque’s seventh and eighth grade football teams host Galveston Scott for games starting at 5:00pm and 6:00pm, while Texas City’s seventh and eighth grade football squads travel to Alvin Junior High for  games at 5:30pm and 6:45pm.

The Astros continue their homestand as they welcome Chicago White Sox for a 7:10pm start. Houston goes with Lance McCullers, who brings a 7-3 record and 3.97 ERA to the mound. He will be opposed by rookie Lucas Giolito, who has given the White Sox a 2-2 record and 2.56 ERA in his first five starts. AT&T Sportsnet will start its coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
