THE AREA SPORTS scene will be eventful as the hiring of a new football coach at
La Marque, UIL district realignment and a busy Friday night of basketball and soccer
carries the action into a new month.
TODAY, WEDNESDAY: La Marque football fans will learn who will lead the Cougars
unto the field this August when Texas City ISD names the new head coach during a
special meeting at 6:30pm. The new coach will replace Mike Jackson, who left the
program for a position at Conroe Grand Oaks high school.
Wrestling is on the agenda for Clear Creek, which will host a tri-meet with La Marque
and Brazoswood beginning at 4:00pm.
A host of the region’s top powerlifters congregate to Pearland high school for a meet
starting at 4:00pm. Dickinson’s Daniel Parr is ranked fourth in Region IV with 1,510
total pounds lifted, while Santa Fe’s Tyler Ray is fifth with 1,490 lbs. Parr will compete
in the 242-pound class with Ray looking to hold down the pack in the 275-pound
division.
TOMORROW, THURSDAY: The UIL will unveil its 2018-20 realignment starting at
9:00am. Friendswood and La Marque are assured of a new district, as the Mustangs
drop from Class 6A to 5A while the Cougars move up from 3A, Division I to 4A,
Division I.
The Rockets head down I-10 West for a visit to the arch rival Spurs beginning at
7:00pm. Houston won the first meeting with a 124-109 decision at Toyota Center on
December 15. TNT will air the game nationally, while AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will
start its coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
FRIDAY: A busy night of boys basketball starts at 7:00pm with Clear Brook at Clear
Lake, Clear Falls at Clear Springs, Dickinson at Alvin, Galveston Ball at Manvel,
Santa Fe at Fort Bend Willowridge and state-ranked Texas City at Shadow Creek.
Three games will tip at 7:30pm as Friendswood visits Clear Creek, Danbury travels
to state-ranked Hitchcock and state-ranked La Marque hits the road against East
Bernard.
In girls hoops, Danbury at state-ranked Hitchcock and La Marque at East Bernard
each start at 6:15pm. Clear Lake at Clear Brook, state-ranked Clear Springs at Clear
Falls, Alvin at Dickinson, Manvel at Galveston Ball, Fort Bend Willowridge at Santa
Fe and Shadow Creek at Texas City each begin at 7:00pm, while Clear Creek at
Friendswood starts at 7:30pm.
The boys soccer schedule will see Santa Fe at Galena Park at 7:00pm with Texas
City at Fort Bend Willowridge beginning at 7:10pm. Alvin at Clear Creek, Clear Brook
at Friendswood and Dickinson at Clear Springs (at Challenger Stadium) will start their
matches at 7:30pm.
The girls soccer slate will have Galena Park at Santa Fe starting at 7:00pm. Shadow
Creek at Texas City begins at 7:10pm, while Clear Creek at Alvin, Clear Springs at
Dickinson and Friendswood at Clear Brook will each begin at 7:30pm.
SATURDAY: The national spotlight falls on the Rockets, who visit the Cavaliers for a
7:30pm tilt that will air on KTRK-13 and AT&T Sportsnet Southwest. Houston defeated
Cleveland on November 9 as James Harden scored 35 points to lead the way for
the Rockets. Both networks will start their pregame shows at 7:00pm.
