THE FIRST WEEKEND of the softball season is loaded with preseason tournaments,
while area girls basketball teams seek to stay alive in the state basketball playoffs.
Add in a host of baseball scrimmages and soccer, and the end of the week is chock
full of action.
TODAY, WEDNESDAY: Love is in the air, yet for those not into the warm fuzzies that
Valentine’s Day evokes, the Rockets will host the Kings in their final game before the
All-Star Break. The 7:00pm tip will see Houston in search of a second win this season
over Sacramento, claiming a 105-100 victory at the Kings on October 18. AT&T
Sportsnet Southwest will begin its coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
TOMORROW, THURSDAY: Softball tournaments dominate the day as Clear Brook,
Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Santa Fe will each participate in the Brenham Leadoff
Classic. Clear Springs and Friendswood are among the teams taking part in the
Bryan-College Station Tournament, while Dickinson is at the Goose Creek Memorial
Tournament.
FRIDAY: The area round of the girls basketball state playoffs will be held both today
and Saturday. Depending on the outcome of their games, state-ranked Clear Springs,
Clear Creek, Galveston Ball and state-ranked Hitchcock will either find themselves still
in the postseason hunt or starting the first steps toward the 2018-19 regular season.
In boys soccer, Texas City is at Fort Bend Elkins starting at 7:10pm, while Clear Brook
at Dickinson, Clear Lake at Clear Springs (at Challenger/Columbia Stadium) and
Friendswood at Alvin each start their matches at 7:30pm. The girls soccer slate will
have Dickinson at Clear Brook, Clear Springs at Clear Lake and Alvin at Friendswood
starting at 7:30pm.
The final scrimmages before the start of baseball season will have Kingwood at
Clear Creek at 4:00pm, while George Ranch visits Clear Falls at 4:30pm. Clear
Springs at St. Thomas and Texas City at Clear Lake are each 5:00pm while Manvel
at Clear Brook is a 5:30pm start. As of press time, the scrimmages for La Marque at
Northbrook and Galveston Ball at Brazosport had not firmed up a start time.
SATURDAY: Santa Fe’s boys soccer team is at Fort Bend Marshall starting at
10:00am, while the Indians’ girls team hosts Marshall at noon. Texas City’s girls team
is at home against Fort Bend Elkins and will also start at noon.
Santa Fe and Texas City’s powerlifting teams will be among the schools at the Bay
City meet, while the Stings’ girls track and field team is at the Fort Bend Elkins meet.
Both the girls and boys track and field teams of Friendswood will participate in the
John Morris III Invitational held at Pearland High School.
