I recently read that there is a lie that most people are guilty of committing on a regular basis. Many of us repeat it often knowing full well that we are lying, yet we let the words come out of our mouths anyway.
I am standing here before you, guilty as charged, because for me, especially this year, it has become easier to do for many reasons – and not just to protect myself. Sometimes, it’s because the person I’m dealing with may not want to handle my truth, or because I feel my burdens are a little too heavy for them to bear. Or maybe it’s because I want to appear stronger than I really am.
Have you figured out the “lie” yet? It’s just three simple words – “I am fine”. They roll off our tongue quickly because they’re easier than explaining what we might actually be going through or feeling.
Each person has his or her own excuses for telling the lie. But maybe it’s time to start being more truthful with one another and to begin trusting each other with some of our innermost feelings.
After all, we all know that the truth is what makes us free. Freedom sounds like a better place in which to dwell.
