Washington watch with Randy Weber

US congressman Randy Weber writes exclusively in The Post about issues involving his work as part of our nation’s government
Since the beginning, as your Congressman, I have said, “It is time to put America first.” I am sure you can understand what a breath of fresh air it was to hear then candidate Donald Trump say, “Let’s make America great again.” Now, President-Elect Trump is holding steadfast to that idea and promising to make it a reality once in office.
While I have the utmost confidence in President-Elect Trump’s capabilities in the White House, I am focused on how to get things done in Congress. House Republicans have been proactive in developing policies that will help boost our economy, empower our job creators and put more money back in the pockets of hard-working Americans. Many of you might know it as “A Better Way.” In this plan, Republicans are putting forth ideas to strengthen our national security, transform our broken tax code, pave the way for affordable health care, and protect our Constitution.
A Better Way is a great foundation for President-Elect Trump’s agenda in his first 100 days in office. This blueprint will jumpstart the process to institute the necessary reforms that will energize our economy and get Americans back to work.
Strengthening our National Security
I agree with the President-Elect, we should not be announcing our military plans and strategies out in public. We live in a world where information disseminated can fall into the hands of our enemies within seconds and we must acknowledge this and adapt. I would like to see Congress and the Trump Administration work together to thwart cyber-attacks, close the readiness gap of our military and strengthen our borders.
Reforming our tax policies
Our current tax system is too complex and too onerous for American job creators to be successful in the 21st Century. This needs to be tackled with real reforms being brought to the table. I would like to work with my colleagues to implement a fairer, flatter, and simpler tax code. The Better Way plan would allow for families to fill out their taxes on a form the size of a postcard. Think about how much time and money you and your family could save. The plan also calls for consolidating the personal income tax rates down to three tax brackets, lowering the top individual tax rate to 33 percent, and lowering the corporate tax rate to 20 percent.
Paving the Way for Affordable Health Care
We hear it in the news almost every day; premiums are skyrocketing and coverage is disappearing. Most Americans agree that Obamacare has got to go. We finally have a President who will work with Congress to repeal this onerous law and to replace it with policies that will help every American find affordable health care, not at the expense of taxpayers.
Protecting Our Constitution
Draining the swamp is a great step toward protecting our Constitution. President-Elect Trump has made it clear that cleaning up the influence of special interests in government is a top priority in his first 100 days. I support his plans for imposing a 5 year-ban on White House and Congressional officials becoming lobbyists after they leave government service, as well as a lifetime ban on White House officials lobbying on behalf of foreign governments.
Most importantly, we are fortunate that the Senate had enough wisdom to not hastily confirm President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland. Now with Trump at the helm, we can rest assure that we will have a conservative justice who will protect the integrity of the Supreme Court and uphold our Constitution.
We have a lot to look forward to in January and a real opportunity to get things done with majorities in both chambers of Congress and a Republican President. I am looking forward to working with President-Elect Trump, Vice President-Elect Pence, Majority Leader McConnell, Speaker Ryan, and my colleagues in the House to make this country great again. After eight years of the over-reaching tax and spend agenda of President Obama, I believe we are going to see major advancements toward putting America first. The potential of the first 100 days of the Trump Administration has me encourage that will we see great cooperation among our elected leadership to advance policies that grow our economy and strengthen our national security.
