Chris in spitting distance of state title

A HOST of area athletes have clinched a berth at the state finals in Austin, with five members of district 24-6a and Hitchcock’s 800-meter relay team competing for a chance at state title glory.

Clear Falls sprinter Christopher Rainey reached the state finals in two events during last weekend’s class 6a, region III meet at Challenger-Columbia stadium in League City, winning the boys’ 200-meter crown while finishing second in the 100-meter dash.

He will be joined in Austin from May 11-13 by Clear Springs’ Peyton Sawyer, who captured the regional boys’ 110-meter hurdles championship, and Friendswood’s Michael Hermes, who finished second in the high jump.

In the girls’ division, Dickinson’s Koi Johnson and Essence Thomas both advanced, with Johnson winning the regional triple jump while Thomas finished second.

Hitchcock’s Brenttany Birdow, Majesty Owens, Arianna Delane and Chrishauna McDaniel finished second in the 800-meter relay during the class 3a, region III meet at Hart stadium on the campus of Baylor University in Waco.
