
The first weekend of February brings a schedule that hits as hard as the next cold front expected to hit the area on Thursday. Take a look at Friday, in which each of the area’s high school athletic programs will be in action in a variety of sports.
Wednesday: Dreams become reality for dozens of area athletes on National Signing Day. Today is the traditional day for high school student-athletes to sign their letters of intent if they did do so during December’s NSD.
The Rockets welcome the surprising Cavaliers to Toyota Center for the only time this season. Tip-off against the Eastern Conference title contenders begins at 7:00pm, with AT&T Sportsnet Southwest beginning coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
Thursday: The Class 6A, Region III Swimming and Diving Finals will be held at Pearland High School’s Natatorium, with those advancing to the state finals later this month.
There are two powerlifting events on the schedule as the Hitchcock girls’ team hosts a meet at Hitchcock High School at 4:00pm. La Marque’s powerlifting squads will take part in a meet at East Chambers.
Clear Brook’s tennis team hits the road for a weekend event at Coppell.
Friday: Friendswood High School’s Natatorium is the site for the 5A, Region III Swimming and Diving Finals, as the top finishers will head to the state finals later this month.
The first track and field meets hit the schedule with Friendswood taking part in Clear Brook’s Wolverine Winter Relays, while Santa Fe and Texas City head to Deer Park for the Jim Kethan Relays.
The boys’ high school basketball schedule has state-ranked Hitchcock at Van Vleck at 5:00pm, followed by Clear Falls at Clear Creek, Clear Springs at state-ranked Dickinson, Friendswood at Manvel, Galveston Ball at Texas City (game can be listened on Victory Sports Network), and Goose Creek Memorial at Santa Fe each starting at 7:00pm.
Meanwhile, the girls’ high school hoops slate has Hitchcock at Van Vleck at 6:30pm, with Clear Creek at Clear Falls, Dickinson at Clear Springs, Manvel at Friendswood, Santa Fe at Goose Creek Memorial and Texas City at Galveston Ball at 7:00pm.
A busy high school boys’ soccer schedule has La Marque at Liberty at 7:00pm, followed by Brazoswood at Clear Brook, Clear Creek at Clear Springs, Clear Falls at Clear Lake, Santa Fe at Goose Creek Memorial and Texas City at Galveston Ball at 7:30pm.
On the girls’ soccer docket, La Marque at Liberty gets underway at 5:00pm, while Clear Brook at Brazoswood, Clear Springs at Clear Creek, Clear Lake at Clear Falls, Galveston Ball at Texas City and Goose Creek Memorial at Santa Fe are each 7:30pm starts.
Both Clear Creek and Clear Springs’ tennis teams are at the NEISD San Antonio Invitational over the weekend, while Texas City’s tennis team is at Alief Hastings.
Among the final softball scrimmages leading into the regular season, Friendswood hosts a tri-meet with Clear Creek and Dobie beginning at 3:30pm. Galveston Ball visits Sweeny at 6:30pm.
As if the day wasn’t filled enough, the Rockets visit the Spurs at 7:30pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starts coverage with the pregame show at 7:00pm.
Saturday: The only event on the schedule has Dickinson at Dobie for a softball scrimmage with a start time that has yet to be announced.
