Brenda and the Bible: Dad Says So

I am constantly amazed at modern technology!

In fact, I recall the first time I used a fax machine in the late nineties. I had just switched jobs and was now working in a large office. As the new girl on the block, I tried very hard not to look so “new” but on my first day I was told to expect a fax to come through from one of our clients.

I nodded my head in recognition, but actually I had no idea what they were talking about. “What’s a fax?” Now, I was familiar with copy machines but fax machines were still fairly new at that time.

Finally, a co-worker pointed me in the direction of a large, complex looking box. I recall just standing there looking perplexed, not sure what to expect when suddenly a low rumbling came from the belly of the beast and out popped the letter from my client.

  It’s a miracle (Lol)!

But the most amazing part to me was how her signature appeared on it: through thin air! How did that physical command (pushing a few buttons) then travel instantly through the atmosphere and manifest itself in physical form somewhere else?

I tell you, I marveled over this for the rest of the day.

But of course, technology has made far greater advances. Now our phones are voice activated, and we can speak into a watch and it obeys (And we laughed at Maxwell Smart for speaking into a shoe). With just our words we can turn on lights, call someone, set reminders, order supplies, food, and well, the list goes on.

We are so advanced, and for mankind this is true, but as always, God was there first.

The whole planet and universe was created through voice activation by the spoken word of God.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God SAID, “Let there be light”; and there was light….”

You and I, mankind, were, from the beginning, spoken into existence.

“Then God SAID, “Let Us make man in our image, according to our likeness …”

Proverbs 18:21 says that “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit (Have you ever heard someone say, “You’re going to eat those words!”).”

God has given us so much authority in the words that we speak.

That is why the angel of the Lord shut Zacharias’ mouth and made him mute because he didn’t believe his words when the angel said that his barren wife Elizabeth would conceive a son (with both being well past child bearing age).

Now it’s possible that this muteness could have also prompted Zacharias to be obedient when he went home and have relations with his wife so she could conceive.

There are many verses regarding the power of the spoken word, but again, zeroing in on Proverbs 18:21 where one man’s unbelief spoken out loud, could have prevented the birth of John the Baptist, who was to “prepare the way of the Lord” and fulfill the prophecy written in Isaiah 40:3-8 regarding the greatest miracle in the history of the world. The birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. God in the flesh.

Our words are activating either death or life, faith or doubt and unbelief. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17

So then the opposite is true as well. Doubt and unbelief also come by hearing reports contrary to God’s word.

The words we speak in faith (knowing that we have what we say according to the word of God) are touching our circumstances in the spiritual realm to see them come to pass in the physical. Words are spiritual seeds traveling through the atmosphere.

“Again I say to you, that if two of you will agree on the earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father who is in heaven.” ASV

God’s word, spoken in faith, is the same as physically touching the hem of Jesus’ garment.

I know some of you reading this are thinking “how can this be?” Remember, you speak into a box, or phone or watch and think nothing of it these days.

With our words we can declare “God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Matt. 6:10

We can speak life into our bodies, we can speak life into our relationships and finances. (We can also shut the mouth of satan, take authority over the devil and the works of darkness in Jesus name. Mark 16:17)

You know, we can have two responses to God’s word.

We can choose to be like Zacharias and fold our arms over our heart in unbelief. Or we can respond with our hearts open, like Mary did when the angel of the Lord prophesied to her that she would give birth to the coming Messiah.

We can stop looking at our circumstances, quit trying to figure out how the fax machine works, or how God’s word will come to pass.

Instead, we can choose to believe our loving Heavenly Father, humble our hearts and simply say …

“Let it be to me according to Your word.”

(Genesis 1:1-3, 1:26 NKJV- caps mine.)
