Dear Frankie: A Couple, Really?

Dear Frankie,

My friend Angie asked me the other day when Buster and I planned on moving in together and starting a family.

I was shocked she thought Buster and I were a couple. I told her Buster and I had been friends since we were puppies and often went to events together, but we definitely were not an item.

She suggested I tell Buster how I felt because he told everyone we were practically engaged. I can’t imagine how Buster would think we were anything except friends. We have never held paws, kissed, or even slow danced at the recent Doggie Day Care Gala. Now how do I break the news to him?

Lola

Dear Lola,

I think Buster is suffering from wishful thinking. He also doesn’t seem to understand the difference between a friendship and a romantic relationship.

It would appear that Buster has some emotional growing up to do. This is his problem, however, and not yours. The challenge for you is telling Buster how you feel and not damaging your relationship. One way to save his feelings might be to tell him Angie said the silliest thing to you the other day. She said she thought the two of you were a couple, and you explained that you were good friends but not sweethearts. Then move on to another subject and hope Buster gets the hint.

Best, Frankie
