Dear Frankie: Dogs are Better Than That

Dear Frankie,

When I got on the doggie day care bus with a wrapped present, Trix said, “Not you, too. How many presents do those foster dogs need?”

As I looked down the aisle, I saw many dogs had presents. A note in last week’s newsletter asked for gifts for the dogs being fostered at our daycare. My mom and I went to the mall last weekend and picked out a bright red leather collar and leash and a red and green coat to go with it.

At lunch at Chuck E. Cheese, my mom told me that when she read the newsletter, she imagined what it would have been like for me if I had been in the shelter at Christmas time and no one thought of me. Then she started to cry. After lunch, she asked me to sit on the bench and wait for her because she had to buy a few more things. When she returned, she had an overflowing shopping bag that I think had a Pet Mart label.

I told Trix about my lunch with my mom and why she should be ashamed of herself. Trix came from a breeder, so she has no idea what it’s like for those who are less privileged.

Marion

Dear Marion,

Glad you told her off. You’re right. Some pedigreed dogs are clueless. They have had a silver bone in their mouth since day one. It is always hard to hear about a selfish and self-involved dog.

Dogs, in general, are better than that; look at all the presents on the bus. Christmas is about giving, not getting. You have to give to receive. I wish more humans had soft hearts like your mom’s. I bet you are right about that shopping bag. Talk about being a lucky Marion.

Wishing you a bountiful New Year

Best, Frankie
