IF ONLY THE Rockets could have found their 3-point range on Monday, Sunday would have been one of the biggest sports days in the city’s history. Alas, life — nor Houston’s shots — didn’t fall their way, so Sunday night will be all about the Astros. There’s money to made at Gulf Greyhound Park and if there’s time on your Monday, there’s plenty of opportunity for you…
TODAY, SUNDAY: The Astros will have the national baseball spotlight when they host the Red Sox in the finale of a four-game series beginning at 7:00pm. Houston gives Charlie Morton (7-0, 2.26 ERA) the assignment of shutting down a Boston team that has the best record in the majors entering the weekend while the Red Sox turn toward former American League Cy Young winner Rick Porcello (7-2, 3.65 ERA). ESPN will have the game, which gives the crew at AT&T Sportsnet Southwest a well-deserved night off.
TOMORROW, MONDAY: There is still time to register for Hardball Academy’s 12-Week Velocity Enhancement Pitching Camp, which begins on Wednesday. The successful course recently added a 4:00-5:30pm session for high school pitchers. As of Friday, only six spots were available. The course is designed to give high school and college pitchers the chance to build velocity by enhancing movement and using proven training techniques. The cost of the course is $350 per month for June thru August. For more information, visit the Hardball Academy website hardballacademy.com) or contact them at 281-227-3225. A new week also means a new week for simulcast racing at Gulf Greyhound Park, which opens its doors at 11:00am. Monday’s schedule starts at 11:30 with action at Derby Lane and will include 14 more races until the simulcast at Orange Park concludes the day at 6:45pm. TUESDAY: The Astros continue their home stand when they welcome their American League West rival Mariners to Minute Maid Park beginning at 7:10pm. Dallas Keuchel (3-7, 3.65 ERA) goes for Houston while Seattle will go with James Paxton (4-1, 3.13 ERA), who threw a no-hitter against the Blue Jays earlier in the season. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start its coverage with the pregame show beginning at 6:30pm.
