GALVESTON COUNTY will be well-represented at the UIL state track and field
finals as a host of athletes earned spots at the May 11-12 meet in Austin.
Dickinson’s Chris Welch and Koi Johnson each won their respective events in
the Class 6A, Region III meet in Humble this past weekend. Welch topped the field
in the boys triple jump with a jump of 51-4.5 feet that was the best effort in the state
this year. Johnson advanced to Austin for a third consecutive year after she won
the girls triple jump with a 39-11.5 feet performance, placing her among the top 10
in the state.
The Clear Falls 4×400 meter relay team of Kennedy Wade, Afiah Braithwaite,
Destiny Muckleroy and Chermarica Hardy finished second with a time of 3:43.35.
The Knights will also have Briana Garcia heading to state after she finished second
in the girls 300 meters with a time of 42.63 seconds.
Clear Springs’ Kirk Collins took second place in both the boys 110 meter hurdles
(14.23 seconds) and 300 meter hurdles (37.30 seconds).
Hitchcock’s quartet of Selena Goodman, Breanna Birdow, Majesty Otems and
Chrishauna McDaniel will compete in both the girls 4×200 and 4×400 relays after
they finished second in both events. The Bulldogs foursome recorded a time of
48.66 seconds in the 4×200 and a time of 1:45.24 in the 4×400. Birdow will also
take part in the girls triple jump after her 35-5 foot effort placed her second in the
event.
La Marque’s Jackeria Woodkins dominated the girls 200 meter and 400 meter
runs, winning both events with times of 25.38 seconds and 57.28 seconds, respectively.
The victories assured the Cougars of having a representative in the state
meet.
