AS THE MOTHER of two young
boys, Kathy Thomas desired to find
an opportunity that would allow her
to be close to them as they grew
up. While her position as managing
editor of the Galveston Daily News
was rewarding, Thomas stepped
away from the role and launched
a chapter in her life that recently
turned 25 years old.
What began in her home office is
now Community Strategies, LLC,
a public relations firm that has received
high praise for Thomas,
who can count BP, Shell, the University
of Texas Medical Branch and Moody Bank among the dozens
of companies who have called upon her services.
“I don’t know how time has flown so fast,” said Thomas. “One day,
I’m planning what’s for dinner and helping with homework, and now
here we are. I’m thrilled to have done this and I look forward to what
the next 25 years hold for me.”
Thomas was fearless in getting her company off the ground, an
experience that was enhanced by being able to do everything from
Cub Scout leader and teaching journalistic writing at her son’s’
school to being a avid fan as they played high school football. The
time spent working at her own pace and watching her sons grow up
paid off well, as Charlie and Brady, ages 32 and 29, respectively,
are both honing their crafts for the military. Charlie, a member of
the army’s Special Forces, is working toward his degree in physical
therapy, while Brady received a law degree at the University of
Houston and is a lawyer in the Marine Corps.
Working with BP early in her career was the door that allowed
Thomas’ skills to be seen by high profile companies that have turned
to her to help solve their challenging problems. Thomas’ work was
central in BP’s solutions for a safer work environment following the
2005 explosion in Texas City, helping the company’s process of recovery.
“I get tremendous joy in helping clients,” she said.
The native Houstonian earned her Bachelor of Journalism with a
Public Relations specialization from the University of Texas. Having
grown up in the heart of the nation’s energy field, Thomas has also
developed a reputation of a go-to source in the financial, real estate
and healthcare industries.
“No two days are the same, which makes things exciting,” said
Thomas. “I look forward to what technology will bring in the years
ahead. It’s pretty exciting to be able to implement what comes next
into my business. At the end of the day, though, the core of what I do
— helping clients — is always going to be needed regardless of what
technology brings before us.”
