The Galveston County Animal Resource Center (ARC) continues to need fosters after taking in more than 77 kittens and cats June 4-8. The staff is pleading to the community for help, especially for foster volunteers. Foster families agree to let animals – in this case kittens and cats – temporarily stay with them while ARC staff works to place them in a permanent home. Foster families provide shelter, food, care and love. You can inquire about fostering at.

In addition to fostering, the community can do its part by helping to care for homeless kittens and cats in their neighborhood rather than turning them into the ARC. If someone has an unwanted litter of kittens at home, ARC staff asks that they continue to care for those kittens at home. ARC needs what space it has available to house kittens and cats that are in danger and have nowhere else to go for care.

Spaying and neutering cats not only helps decrease the number of animals in shelters, but also cuts down on overpopulation of kittens. Did you know in three years, one unneutered male cat and one unspayed female cat can produce 382 kittens? Additional benefits include increased lifespan, lower risk of some cancers, reduce roaming, reduce aggression, fight and decrease overpopulation and decrease in the number of animals in shelters.

Adoptions made through the ARC include spay and neuter services. The shelter does not currently offer those services to the general public for privately-owned pets. However, there are several local facilities that offer low-cost spay/ neuter assistance including:
