Matt Logmann’s “Reclamation” has a haunting quality.

By Mary Vinnedge

Longtime photographer Matthew Logmann will showcase about a dozen of his artworks as the Galveston Art League Gallery’s Featured Artist of the Month for July. The gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston, is open from 12:00pm to 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays thru July 26. (Gallery visitors will need to adhere to the city of Galveston’s protective facemask requirement and in addition are asked to practice physical distancing as recommended by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.)

Logmann’s pictures will be exhibited and offered for sale on GalvestonArtLeague.com. All are ready for hanging, as are other 2-D artworks that league members are exhibiting and offering for sale in July. Other artwork for sale in the gallery and online are 3-D items such as sculpture, carvings, pottery, and jewelry.

Online purchases may be completed with credit cards, or shoppers can email or call to arrange to pay by cash or check. Delivery is offered in multiple ways: Local drop-offs, curbside pickup at the gallery, or third-party shipping (out-of-town buyers will incur an additional fee for shipping).

Logmann has been a photographer for more than 40 years. Early on, his subject matter was street photography, which blended in a bit of fashion and portraiture.

Having embraced the digital world of photography, he expanded into scenic and nature images along with employing the motion of the subject or camera to achieve desired effects in a still medium. Always a stickler for control, Logmann does his own post-capture modification of images but minimally. He prints his own final images.

Logmann, a resident of Houston, is basically self-taught, although he has participated in workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He likes to exchange ideas and commentary with other artists. Logmann prefers black-and-white film as a medium because it offers excellent darkroom control.

He is a professional-level member of the Galveston Art League, a nonprofit organization established 106 years ago with a goal of promoting visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County area. The Art League and its downtown Galveston gallery are operated exclusively by volunteers, and the organization has never had a salaried employee.

The league is supported by contributions, an annual fall gala, and memberships at various levels, with an individual membership just $40 a year. GalvestonArtLeague.com offers detailed information about memberships; click on “Join” to learn more. The website also has links on its homepage that allow visitors the option of seeing and shopping past league shows.
