The Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for October, Jackie Liddell, poses with her award-winning transparent watercolor “Split Personality,” a leafy inhabitant of her household. See more of her work noon to 6 p.m. on all October weekends at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. The sale of her works and those by other regional artists is online at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com, too.

Jackie Liddell disproves that mean-spirited ditty about those who can, do; and those who can’t, teach. Liddell has done both, often simultaneously, with accolades.

She hits another high note of achievement in October as featured artist at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston. About a dozen of her paintings will be offered for sale from 12:00pm to 6:00pm Saturdays and Sundays beginning this Sunday, October 3 and continuing thru October 25 in the gallery and on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.

Liddell finds inspiration all around her, from her houseplants to a seafaring trip that she describes as “a thrilling day I had sailing on our friend’s beautiful wooden boat.” But many of her paintings are drawn solely from her imagination.

A League City resident, Liddell has had a lifelong dedication to the arts through teaching, community involvement, and her love of painting. She has a master’s degree in fine arts, with a membership in the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the Purple Sage signature membership in the Texas Watercolor Society, an Elite Signature membership in The Watercolor Art Society of Houston, a Signature membership in the National Society of Art, and memberships in several other art organizations.

For more than four decades, she has shared her love of art and teaching art in the Clear Creek Independent School District, the University of Houston – Clear Lake, and Alvin Community College. Liddell also has led and helped with art workshops held in several Texas cities.

Her awards include being tapped as Clear Creek Secondary Teacher of the Year, receiving the Houston Mayor’s Excellency Award, and reaching the finals for a Hunting Art Prize for Texas. She received honorable mention in the Watercolor Art Society’s International Exhibition in 2019, and she was Merchandise Award winner in the Texas Watercolor Society Exhibition. In addition, Liddell has received many first-place awards in juried shows, including the Texas City Art Festival.

Her paintings have been selected for use in these books: “Incite 2: Color Passions, The Best of Mixed Media,” “Incite 3: The Art of Storytelling, The Best of Mixed Media” and “Art Journey Animals, A Collection of Inspiring Contemporary Masterworks.”

To promote the importance of art for future generations, Liddell volunteers as the director of the Galveston Art League’s annual student art show. She is a professional member of the 106-year-old nonprofit Art League, which promotes appreciation of visual arts and art education.

The all-volunteer organization supports itself through memberships of various levels for artists and non-artists alike (to learn how you can help, please visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com and click on “Join”); the league also holds a fundraising gala each fall, offers low-cost and free workshops to area residents of all ages, and hosts three juried competitions annually.

Galveston Art League welcomes new members and gallery guests year-round. If you can’t visit the gallery in person, you may see and shop the current show – plus a couple of past ones – 24/7 on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. The website is also a great resource for learning about the league, its events, and its long history. If you have questions, please email gallery2117@gmail.com.
