Galveston hosted a 250th Marine Corps Ball at Moody Gardens Saturday. It was one of many held around the nation and around the world.
Holding a ball to celebrate the birthday of the United States Marines is a yearly tradition that includes a formal birthday cake cutting. The slices of cake are shared first by the oldest Marine present, who then passes the slice to the youngest Marine.

The youngest Marine at Galveston’s ball was born on November 14, 2006 and comes from League City. As he gobbled down his slice of cake, other younger Marines cheered him on.
Another tradition at Marine Corps balls is a the reading of Marine Corps Order 47. During this reading and throughout the formal event, Marines’ voices are heard as they express their dedication through their chants of Marine pride with Oorah.
Shouts of “Oorah!” from young Marines, whether in unison or from individual voices, were commanding as the room vibrated with the warrior cry of the United States Marines. Marines are trained and ready to serve and protect on land, at sea and in the air.

The United States Marines were founded on November 10, 1775, in Philadelphia. Not only are they in service as warriors, but Marines are also peacekeepers and provide humanitarian assistance when called to do so.
Thank you to the United States Marines for 250 years of service, sacrifice and dedication!!!
