IN A WORD, this weekend will be busy…
WEDNESDAY: Texas City will have a city-wide pep rally for its high school football
and volleyball teams beginning at 5:00pm at Stingaree Stadium. The public
is welcomed to attend, as orange and black will be the colors of the day as the
Stings’ football team begins district play.
The Astros close out their three-game series at the Blue Jays as Gerrit Cole (15-
5, 2.92 ERA) gets his final regular season start and will be opposed by Toronto’s
Sean Reid-Foley (2-4, 5.40 ERA). First pitch is slated for 3:07pm, with AT&T
Sportsnet Southwest starting its pregame show at 2:30pm.
THURSDAY: After two weeks of “vacation,” Galveston Ball returns to action
when they open District 10-5A-1 play at Richmond Foster beginning at 7:00pm.
The Tors started the season with wins over La Marque and Houston Yates but
weather canceled a Week Three home date against Houston Wheatley before
Ball had its scheduled open date last weekend.
In what will be their final series of the regular season, the Astros start a fourgame
set at the Orioles, who entered the week with a franchise-record 110 losses.
Justin Verlander (16-9, 2.60 ERA) goes for Houston while Baltimore counters
with Davis Hess (3-10, 5.14 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starts coverage at
5:30pm with the pregame show that will lead to the first pitch at 6:05pm.
FRIDAY: The first Friday of district play will have Clear Brook at Clear Creek,
Clear Springs at Clear Falls and Texas City at Friendswood beginning at 7:00pm,
while Santa Fe is at Nederland at 7:30pm. In what will be their last non-district
games, Hitchcock hosts KIPP Houston and La Marque welcomes Jasper in contests
that will each start at 7:30pm.
In high school volleyball action, Palacios is at Hitchcock beginning at 5:00pm,
while Sweeny at La Marque starts at 5:30pm. Clear Lake at Clear Brook, Clear
Creek at Clear Springs and Alvin at Dickinson each begin their matches at
6:00pm, with Texas City at Galveston Ball, Santa Fe at Galena Park and Friendswood
at Goose Creek Memorial will start at 6:30pm.
Texas City’s cross country teams will be among the schools participating at the
Bulldog Invitational at Northwest Park in La Porte.
Rookie Framber Valdez (4-1, 2.08 ERA) will make his last start of the regular
season while also bidding for a spot on the postseason roster when the Astros
take on the Orioles beginning at 6:05pm. As of press time, Baltimore had not
made a decision on a starter. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start the pregame
show at 5:30pm.
SATURDAY: Undefeated Dickinson starts District 24-6A play when they take
on a Clear Lake team that gained its first win of the season last week, a 56-0
decision over Houston Chavez. The two teams meet at Challenger-Columbia
Stadium and will kick off at 6:00pm.
Local college football teams will be in action starting at 2:30pm when Lamar
travels to Nicholls State and Rice visits Wake Forest. Central Arkansas visits
Sam Houston State at 3:00pm, while Prairie View and Grambling square off in
Dallas’ Cotton Bowl beginning at 4:00pm. Houston Baptist will be in Dallas as
the Huskies play SMU at 6:00pm.
The Texas City Stingrays football team will have Stingaree Stadium for themselves
as they will host games from 7:00am to 4:30pm.
Charlie Morton brings his 15-3 record and 3.18 ERA into the third game of the
series as the Orioles, who will look to Dylan Bundy (8-15, 5.37 ERA) when the
teams meet at 6:05pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start its coverage beginning
with the pregame show at 5:30pm.
