We are all having to endure a stay at home situation due to the Corona virus pandemic. I hope all of you who are reading this are well and not affected.

I have some quick thoughts on those who are more seriously affected.  Corona is a respiratory disease. There have been reports that a combination of the drugs chloroquine and azithromycin are achieving some beneficial results in treating the respiratory disease.

On thinking about this, the Azithromycin is not very likely to have any effect on a virus, it may however be helping to prevent or treat any bacterial secondary infections that might cause or exacerbate pneumonia.

It is not surprising that any secondary infections occur as many of the bacteria that cause them are found in the mouth.  Sick people don’t usually have good oral hygiene. Neither do many people in nursing homes, where there seems to be a high death rate from Corona. Poor oral hygiene, combined with an immune system already under attack, can certainly lead to further infections.

What can you do?

BE sure to keep your oral hygiene at a very high level.  If you are unlucky enough to be infected with the virus, keeping the bacteria in your mouth at a lower level, may prevent you from a more serious situation.

Stay well.
