SUPPORT COM’S MAINTENANCE VOTE

COLLEGE OF THE MAINLAND is an anchor of Galveston County and continues to produce quality men and women who, in turn, contribute to the health and success of this area. Two years ago, the community stepped up and voted for a $162 million bond that launched the construction of new buildings for STEAM, industrial careers and the administration along with expansion of the theater that houses COM’s award-winning performers and a new police station.

As early voting begins on Tuesday, College of the Mainland is asking the community to again step up to the plate and do its part toward further educating Galveston County’s best and brightest while also keeping tuitions among the lowest in the state of Texas. COM’s Maintenance Tax Note would allow it to refinance its maintenance tax note, saving millions of dollars at a time where every penny matters.

By voting on the MTN, our community will help COM take advantage of historically-low interest rates. Over the life of the loan, COM would save up to $4.3 million without sacrificing its mission of offering low-cost opportunities for its students.

For the low price of a $0.01 increase in our tax rate, the community would see that $4.3 million saved over a 17-year period translates into having that money spent toward making College of the Mainland stronger. The increase would only cost an average of $16 per year. Almost all of us can envision how many times we put $16 into something that has little bearing compared to that this $16 can do for COM.

As the area’s leader for hyper-local news, The Post Newspaper’s support of this measure was a very easy decision. As we approach our 18th year in the community, we know that our partnership with College of the Mainland is valuable and one that we will continue as the years go by.

It is our recommendation that you, our readers, will understand the value that comes with supporting COM. Galveston County continues to grow, especially in Texas City and La Marque, two cities that rely on the college building its youth as they grow into adulthood. As you place your vote, make sure your support of COM translates into a “Yes” for the Maintenance Tax Note.
