Friendswood ISD is preparing to seek competitive sealed proposals for renovations to Friendswood High School on February 2 after trustees voted to terminate the existing contract.
The district’s superintendent said the firm’s budget exceeded the district’s original $51.6 million budget by more than $3.6 million.
Surging construction costs led to numerous design alternations, but the firm ultimately was unable to fit the budget within the overall $128 million voter-approved bond from 2020.
A new performing arts center was among the features included in the preliminary design that focused on achieving transparency between programs, creating highly flexible spaces, installing outdoor learning spaces, and requiring low maintenance.
The district’s revised timeline has construction starting in April with completion in summer 2023.
