MARCH means madness across the area’s sports scene as the Astros continue the
early portion of spring training while high school teams get into their final batch of nondistrict
games. The high school soccer season is heading into the home stretch of the
regular season with teams looking to assure themselves of a postseason spot once the
state tourney begins in a couple of weeks.
TODAY, SUNDAY: Enjoy an afternoon of spring baseball as the World Champion Astros
meet the Cardinals beginning at 12:05pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the game
live. The day is highlighted by the final games of the annual Shriner College Classic
at Minute Maid Park as Texas City High School alum and current Sam Houston State
baseball coach Matt Deggs leads the Bearkats against Mississippi State at 2:30pm.
Louisiana plays Kentucky at 11:00am while Houston and Vanderbilt conclude the Classic
at 6:00pm.
Tickets can be purchased at the gate.
TOMORROW, MONDAY: A pair of high school baseball games are on tap as Houston
Yates visits La Marque at 6:00pm while Dobie is at Clear Brook starting at 6:30pm.
Santa Fe’s girls golf team will be among the schools in action at Texas City’s Bayou Golf
Club, an event that is scheduled to begin at 9:00am.
TUESDAY: The night’s softball schedule begins with Houston Washington at La Marque
starting at 5:00pm. Clear Springs at Alvin, Clear Brook at Clear Creek, Friendswood at
Clear Falls, Clear Lake at Dickinson and Santa Fe at Galveston Ball each start at 6:30pm.
In high school baseball, Clear Creek at Baytown Sterling, Strake Jesuit at Clear Falls and
Fort Bend Elkins at Clear Springs each begin at 6:00pm while Dobie at Clear Brook gets
under way at 6:30pm.
Boys soccer kicks off at 7:00pm with Shadow Creek at Galveston Ball, followed by Fort
Bend Willowridge at Texas City at 7:10pm. Galena Park at Santa Fe will begin its match
at 7:30pm. The girls soccer slate will see Galveston Ball at Shadow Creek at 7:00pm
and Texas City at Fort Bend Willowridge starting at 7:10pm. Santa Fe at Galena Park will
start at 7:30pm.
The Rockets get the national spotlight as they visit the Thunder starting at 7:00pm on
TNT. Houston lost the only other meeting against Oklahoma City on Christmas night in a
112-107 that saw James Harden score 25 points despite a rough shooting night (7-for-18).
The Rockets entered Saturday night’s home game against the Celtics with a 14-game
win streak and the best record in the NBA at 48-13.
