THE 1-3 Texas Southern University Tigers are
off this weekend after taking a 70-14 loss at
University of Houston on September 22. The
Tigers will resume play next Saturday when
they resume Southwestern Athletic Confer ence
play at home against Alabama A&M.
Despite the slow start, optimism remains
high for TSU, especially when it comes to
their ground game, where Dickinson alum
Brad Woodard looks to help spark. The team’s
leading rusher from last season, Woodward
has 124 yards on 38 hard-earned carries in a
schedule that has seen the Tigers play consecutive
road games against Texas State, Alcorn
State and Houston.
Although Woodard had just 26 yards on nine
carries in the loss to Houston, TSU coach Mi chael
Haywood feels the experience will help
both Woodard and the offense as they dive
into the meat of the SWAC schedule.
“It really gave the offensive line much-needed
confidence that we can block these guys
even if they are a hard division,” said Haywood.
“I really think it gave them a lot of con fidence
because they played better than they
played all year on the offensive line.”
Woodard isn’t alone when it comes to Dickinson
alums on the TSU roster. Redshirt
freshman wide receiver Roylain Oliver and
sophomore Archie Williams are also on the
Tigers along with former Santa Fe punter
Donald Halstead.
