The Friendswood Mustangs swim team kicked off the 2018-19 swim season with
their annual FISD Sprint Kickoff meet at the FHS Natatorium this past weekend.
Eight teams were here competing in this meet, with Clear Brook, Alvin, Pearland,
Clear Creek, Clear Springs, Clear Lake and Clear Falls joining Friendswood.
Friendswood got better than expected results in their regular season opener.
The meet kicked off with the diving competition on Friday night. Lily Ellis for the
Mustang girls took first place and established a new pool & team record for six
dives with 253.40 points. On the boys side, Mustangs Gabriel Costa placed second
with a score of 242.85 and John Keith placed third with a score of 161.30.
On Saturday, the swim portion of the Sprint Kickoff Meet was also very successful
for the Mustangs swimmers. With close to 300 swimmers competing in
the swim portion, Mustang swimmers either won their events or finished in the top
eight. Top swimmers for the girls were Olivia Theall, Alison Proulx, Ana McHenry,
Mara White and newcomers Lezli Sisung, Leah Givens and Abigail Nelson leading
the way in scoring for their individual events and relays.
As a result of their exceptional swimming and diving, the Friendswood girls
team took first place in the FISD Sprint Kickoff meet. The boys’ team had a very
successful day as well. Each of the boys’ swimmers established new personal
best times along with finishing in many of the event’s top eight finisher times.
Top swimmers for the boys team that help get most of the team points were
Max Hardt, Josh Haffelder, Vinnie Gangitano, Joe Sloan, Nick Jankowski and
newcomers T.J. Sisung and Nathan Haney. The team did fall a few points short
to boys champion Clear Creek, finishing second. Overall it was a great start to a
very promising season for the Friendswood H.S. 2018-19 swim season and a first
step toward competing in the state finals early next year.
