HIGH SCHOOL football and basketball fans can rejoice at a schedule that will

see the final weekend of the regular season before the march to the state championships

officially begin while the boys’ regular season starts. The majority of

the area’s girls’ hoops teams converge on Clear Creek for the Peggy Whitley

Classic, and the Rockets look to keep their momentum going into road trips into

Oklahoma City and San Antonio.

WEDNESDAY:  A handful of boys’ basketball teams participate in their final

scrimmages prior to the regular season openers this weekend. Clear Falls

and Texas City will be part of a multi-team scrimmage at Dawson beginning at

4:00pm, the same time Clear Brook will host a multi-team tune-up.

THURSDAY:  Each of the CCISD girls basketball teams (Brook, Creek, Falls,

Lake, state-ranked Springs), along with Galveston Ball, will take part in the 61st

Annual Peggy Whitely Classic, which begins today. The three-day tourney will

have 24 teams competiting for the right to play in the championship game that

will be played at Butler Gymnasium at Clear Creek High School Saturday at

noon.

Three other schools will take part in tournaments, as state-ranked Hitchcock

and Santa Fe each take part in the Columbia Tournament, while Friendswood

heads to San Antonio for one of the city’s bigger girls basketball tourneys.

The Rockets will have the national spotlight as they visit the Thunder in a game

televised by TNT beginning at 7:00pm. Wins over the Nets and Bulls over the

weekend put Houston at 3-5 entering Monday night’s game at the Pacers. It will

be rare night off for AT&T Sportsnet Southwest.

FRIDAY:  The final Friday of the high school football regular season will have

Friendswood at Angleton, Clear Lake at Clear Brook, Clear Springs at Clear

Creek, Alvin at Dickinson, Houston Kashmere at La Marque, Barbers Hill at

Santa Fe and Galveston Ball at Texas City, with each beginning at 7:00pm.

Hitchcock at Palacios kicks off at 7:30pm.

Clear Springs boys’ basketball gets its season underway when the Chargers

meet Pasadena Memorial at 7:00pm.

SATURDAY:  State-ranked Dickinson’s boys’ basketball team opens its 2018-19

regular season when the Gators take on Morton Ranch at the RCS Sports Season

Opener event at Campbell Center in Houston. Tip-off is slated for 3:00pm.

Other boys’ hoops teams in action include Clear Falls at Pasadena Memorial at

11:00am, Santa Fe at Pasadena at 12:30pm, Houston Madison at La Marque at

1:30pm and Galveston Ball at South Houston beginning at 2:00pm.

The local college football schedule will have Abilene Christian at Sam Houston

State at 2:30pm, followed by Houston Baptist at Lamar at 3:00pm. Temple at

Houston and Rice at Louisiana Tech both kick off at 6:00pm.

For the first time this season, the Rockets square off against the arch rival

Spurs, who welcome them to San Antonio for a 7:30pm tip. Both Western Conference

powerhouses are off to slow starts this year, but records are secondary

in this longtime I-10 streetfight. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the game

live starting with the pregame show at 7:00pm, with NBA-TV also taking the

coverage from them.
