THE 2019 HIGH SCHOOL football season is mere 34 weeks away, but Galveston Ball coach Kimble Anders can rest assured he’ll have the most potent weapon in District 10-5A-1 returning to the Tors’ backfield. Junior running back Clarence Dalton was named the district’s top offensive player following a season that saw him rush for 1,337 yards and 10 touchdowns on 160 carries while catching 16 passes for 172 yards. After sharing time in the Ball backfield his first two seasons, Dalton came into his own during the 2018 season, hitting the 100-yard barrier eight times. Ball quarterback Martavian Jackson was named to the first team after passing for 1,512 yards and eight touchdowns while completing almost 70 percent of his attempts. The senior also dashed for 333 yards on 75 carries and added six touchdowns on the ground. Tors senior receiver Jaden Bennett also earned first team recognition after recording a team-best 54 receptions for 729 yards and six touchdowns. The Tors added a pair of players on the second team offense, as lineman Erick Rodriguez and receiver Nigel Green were selected to the squad. Defensive tackle John Brown, linebacker Michael Franks, cornerback Evan Bennett and safety Fabian Jobe represented Ball on the second team defense. Making the first team offense for Friendswood were lineman Michael Foster and receiver Austin Alvarez, who caught 42 passes for 603 yards and eight touchdowns. On defense, end Mike Hermes, linebacker Dane Roenne and safety Trey Mappe represented the Mustangs. Lineman Rodrick Hutchinson, running back Luke Revere and receiver Christian Lee were each rewarded with second team offense honors for Friendswood, while tackle Davis Tinger made the second team defense for the Mustangs. Texas City lineman Ronald Williams, fullback T.J. Fountain and running back JoVel McDaniel (1,001 rushing yards, nine touchdowns) were named to the first team offense, with tight end Maurice Walker and quarterback Phillip McDaniel making the second team offense for the Stingarees. Lineman Jontel Stevenson, linebacker Mykal Brow and cornerback Corday Williams represented Texas City on the second team defense. Shadow Creek quarterback Jamarian George was named the 10-5A-1 player of the year after helping the Sharks reach the 5A, Division I state championship game. Richmond Foster tackle Chisdoze Nwankwo was selected as the defensive player of the year, while Foster receiver Cody Jackson earned newcomer of the year. Foster’s Jaden Smith was named the district’s top special teams player, while Angleton’s Jason Williams received 10-5A-1 honors for the top utility player.
