IT’S THE TIME OF YEAR where On the Field has to be separated from itself. From now until…well, who knows, the Wednesday edition will be split, with football having its own page with the rest of the other sports sharing space. If we kept football here, OTF would eat up half the page. WEDNESDAY: Gerrit Cole (15-5, 2.75 ERA) takes the mound for the Astros in the middle game of the series against the Rays, who will throw Ryan Yarborough (11-3, 3.29 ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin coverage at 6:30pm, leading into the game at 7:10pm. THURSDAY: Two tournaments will have the bulk of the area’s volleyball teams in action. Clear Brook, Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Clear Springs will take part in the annual CCISD Tournament while Santa Fe welcomes La Marque and a host of other schools for the Indians’ annual Labor Day Classic. After a day off on Friday, both tournaments will resume play on Saturday. Clear Creek’s cross-country team will take part in the Huntsville Invitational, held at Kate Barr Ross Park at 4:00pm. It’s daytime baseball at Minute Maid Park when Zack Greinke (14-4, 2.83 ERA) gets the call for the Astros in the finale of their series against the Rays at 1:10pm. Tampa Bay had not named a starter as of Monday evening. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will hit the air with the pregame show at 12:30pm. FRIDAY: The high school volleyball schedule begins with Deer Park at Clear Brook at 5:30pm. Brazoswood visits Dickinson at 6:00pm, following by Clear Springs at Friendswood, Terry at Galveston Ball and Texas City at Shadow Creek at 6:30pm. In cross-country, Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Clear Springs will participate an event hosted by Clear Lake beginning at 7:30pm. The high school tennis schedule will have Clear Brook at Deer Park at 3:00pm, followed by Clear Springs at Clear Creek at 3:30pm. The Astros head up north to open a weekend set at the Blue Jays starting at 6:07pm. Wade Miley (13-4, 3.13 ERA) is the pitcher of choice for Houston and will be countered by Toronto’s Trent Thornton (4-8, 5.34 ERA). The pregame show starts at 5:30pm on AT&T Sportsnet Southwest. SATURDAY: Neither the Astros nor Blue Jays have announced a starter for the 2:07pm contest. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start 1:30pm with the pregame show.
