A HANDFUL OF AREA VOLLEYBALL TEAMS will play both Monday and Tuesday in order to make up for matches postponed by Tropical Storm Imelda. The week begins with double-dip of Houston sports as the Astros close out their regular season home schedule while the Texans head to Los Angeles in what could be a high-scoring affair against the Chargers.

Sunday: Justin Verlander (19-6, 2.50 ERA) bids for a 20th win in the Astros’ home finale of the regular season against the Angels. Verlander, who comes into the game with 283 strikeouts, will have one more start in order to join teammate Gerrit Cole in the 300K club and would mark only the second time in major league history that a pair of teammates both reached the plateau. Oddly enough, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling, who performed the feat with the 2001 World Series champion Arizona Diamondbacks, were both former Astros. Jose Rodriguez (0-0, 1.84 ERA) gets the start for Los Angeles when the teams start at 1:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starts coverage at 12:30pm with the pregame show.

The Texans look to improve to 2-1 when they visit the 1-1 Chargers in Los Angeles. KHOU 11 will have the game at 3:25pm.

The Cowboys (2-0) host the winless Dolphins (0-2), kicking things off at noon. The game will be aired on FOX 26.

Monday: Two matches postponed by Imelda will get under way as Texas City visits Baytown Lee beginning at 4:30pm. Santa Fe clashes at Friendswood at 6:00pm.

Texas City continues its fall league softball schedule, as area programs square off at Texas City High School’s softball field from 5:00pm to 9:30pm.

Tuesday: The usual volleyball schedule resumes, beginning with Columbia at La Marque at 5:30pm. Alvin at Clear Falls, Clear Creek at Clear Lake, Van Vleck at Hitchcock and Dickinson at Clear Springs each begin at 6:00pm. Galveston Ball at Friendswood, Santa Fe at Goose Creek Memorial and Crosby at Texas City are 6:30pm starts.

In team tennis, Dickinson at Clear Falls starts at 3:00pm, followed by Clear Springs at Clear Brook and Texas City at Galena Park at 4:00pm.

The Astros open the final week of the regular season in Seattle, where Cole (18-5, 2.61 ERA) gets the nod for Houston against Mariners starter Marco Gonazles (16-11, 4.14 ERA). AT&T
