As I’m writing this column from my home in Galveston, the storm Imelda is visiting us. Looking out my window, the rain is falling, the palm trees are dancing, and I am finding it quite beautiful. Some find beauty in a person’s physique or outstanding figure. Maybe it’s their latest professional hairstyle from the most expensive colorist and stylist available. Put those together with a fabulous designer wardrobe from head to toe and you would have an incredibly beautiful person, by most people’s definition.
We all look at magazines, television programs and go shopping, and some may be able to afford all of the latest fashions and some of us just look, wish and admire. But, is it the items we admire that really defines beautiful? I try and look for beauty everywhere. I’ve seen it in the face of a homeless woman who wanted to give me one of her prized possessions because I offered a little help. At that moment that precious lady was one of the most beautiful people I had ever seen. Her beauty came from deep inside her and illuminated her entire being and was completely breathtaking. There is all kind of beauty around us. Try to keep your heart and mind open to see the beauty in people in a new and different way. Especially the ones that might not be considered to be beautiful by the world’s standards. And like today, remember even storms have their unique beauty. You just have to remind yourself to appreciate it all.
