IT DOESN’T TAKE LONG for 2020 to kick into high gear as the start of high school soccer sees area teams competing in tournaments throughout the state. District play warms up in high school basketball, and the area’s grapplers gather at Clear Falls for the year’s first wrestling meet. The week caps off with the Texans looking to skip past the Bills in the AFC Wild Card.

Thursday: Opening week of the 2020 high school soccer season begins with most area teams competing in tournament play.
The girls’ soccer slate will have Clear Brook at the Humble ISD Tourney, while Clear Creek takes part in the Kingwood High School Tournament. Clear Falls will be among the teams at the Waller Classic, with Clear Springs at The Woodlands HS Tournament. Dickinson is at the Angleton Tourney, while Friendswood is at the College Station ISD Tournament.
Among the boys’ teams in tournament action, Clear Falls hosts the Pearland Tournament, while Clear Springs is at the Pasadena ISD Tourney. Dickinson is at the Willis Tourney, Friendswood is at the Grapevine Tournament, while Santa Fe is at the Stafford Tournament.
Friday: The boys’ basketball schedule starts at 1:30pm with Galveston Ball at Santa Fe and Friendswood at Texas City, a game that can be listened to live on Victory Sports Network (https://www.meridix.com/channel/?liveid=VictorySportsNet#/). State-ranked La Marque is at Houston Episcopal beginning at 3:00pm, while Alvin at Clear Creek, state-ranked Dickinson at Clear Falls and Clear Brook at Clear Springs each tip at 7:30pm. The day’s slate is concluded with Boling at Hitchcock at 7:30pm.
In girls’ basketball, La Marque plays Tarkington at Toyota Center beginning at 12:00pm, followed by Clear Springs at Clear Brook and Clear Falls at Dickinson at 1:00pm. Clear Creek at Alvin gets underway at 2:00pm, followed by Texas City at Friendswood at 4:00pm. Boling at Hitchcock starts at 6:00pm, while Santa Fe at Galveston Ball closes out the schedule at 7:00pm.
The boys’ soccer schedule will have Clear Brook at Scarborough at 12:00pm, while Dayton visits Texas City at 7:00pm. Waltrip at Clear Creek starts at 7:30pm.
The girls’ soccer slate will have CE King at Galveston Ball beginning at 12:00pm, while Pasadena Memorial at Santa Fe and Alvin at Texas City are each 2:00pm starts.
Wrestling is back on the schedule as Clear Falls welcomes Clear Brook and Clear Springs among the schools taking part in the two-day CFISD Tournament.
The Rockets play their first game of the 2020 portion of the regular season when they welcome the 76ers starting at 7:00pm. ESPN will have the national broadcast but AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will also have coverage, which begins with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
Saturday: Texas City will host a soccer alumni twin-bill as the Stingarees girls’ alums scrimmage this year’s roster at 10:00am, followed by a boys’ alumni match starting at 12:00pm.
The Texans make their bid for the Super Bowl when the AFC South champs welcome the Bills in an AFC Wild Card matchup starting at 3:35pm. ESPN and KTRK 13 will each have the game live.
