January ends with a buffet of local sports

THE FIRST MONTH OF 2020 ends with a loaded weekend of local sports that includes regional swimming/diving meets and the first taste of track and field. As usual, basketball and soccer carry the bulk of the slate along with a busy Saturday of high school wrestling.

Wednesday: The high school wrestling schedule will have Clear Creek taking part in a tri-meet which includes host Clear Lake and Katy Taylor beginning at 5:00pm. Clear Falls is at Kingwood Park and Clear Brook is at Summer Creek. Both meets also begin at 5:00pm.

The Rockets visit the Trail Blazers beginning at 9:30pm. The game will be televised by both ESPN and AT&T Sportsnet Southwest, with the latter starting its pregame show at 9:00pm.

Thursday: No high school varsity events are scheduled for the day.

Friday: A busy night of high school boys’ basketball tips at 7:00pm with Clear Lake at Clear Creek, Alvin at Clear Falls, Clear Springs at state-ranked Dickinson, Galveston Ball at Galena Park, Friendswood at Santa Fe and Baytown Lee at Texas City. Palaicos at Hitchcock and Columbia at state-ranked La Marque each begin at 7:30pm, with the Columbia-LM being broadcast live on Victory Sports Net.

In girls’ high school basketball, Palacios at state-ranked Hitchcock starts the evening at 6:15pm, followed by La Marque at Columbia at 6:30pm. Clear Falls at Alvin, Texas City at Baytown Lee, Barbers Hill at Clear Brook, Clear Creek at Clear Lake, state-ranked Clear Springs at Dickinson, Santa Fe at Friendswood and Galena Park at Galveston Ball each start at 7:00pm.

The high school boys’ soccer slate will have Texas City at Baytown Lee, Alvin at Clear Creek, Dickinson at Clear Falls, Santa Fe at Friendswood and Galena Park are each 7:30pm starts.

The high school girls’ soccer schedule has Clear Creek at Alvin, Clear Brook at Clear Springs, Clear Falls at Dickinson, Galveston Ball at Galena Park, Friendswood at Santa Fe and Baytown Lee at Texas City. Each match starts at 7:30pm.

Both the 6A and 5A swimming regionals will be held today and Saturday. The 6A, Region VI meet will be held at the Pearland Natatorium, while the 5A region VII meet will be at Don Cook Natatorium in Sugar Land.

Both the Santa Fe and Texas City tennis teams will be in action, as the Indians take part in the Brazosport Tournament while the Stingarees head to North Shore for a tourney held by Galena Park ISD.

As if Friday couldn’t get busier, the Texas City girls’ track and field team kick off their 2020 season when they participate at the McNeese University Invitational.

The Rockets wrap a bow on the day when they host the Mavericks with a 7:00pm start on ESPN. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest is also covering the game starting with the pregame show at 6:30pm.

Saturday: Clear Creek’s wrestling team plays host to a tourney that will include Friendswood, Houston Westside and Cy Woods.
