Matthew Logmann, a photographer for more than 40 years, is the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for April. From April 2-26, he will exhibit and offer for sale about a dozen photos near the front of the Art League’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston, which is open noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. The gallery also will stay open until 9 p.m. for ArtWalk on Saturday, April 18.
Early on, Logmann’s subject matter was street photography, which blended in a bit of fashion and portraiture.
Having embraced the digital world of photography, he expanded into scenic and nature images along with employing the motion of the subject or camera to achieve desired effects in a still medium. Always a stickler for control, Logmann does his own post-capture modification of images but minimally. He prints his own final images.
Logmann, a resident of Houston, is basically self-taught, although he has participated in workshops in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He likes to exchange ideas and commentary with other artists. Logmann prefers black-and-white film as a medium because it offers excellent darkroom control.
He is a professional-level member of the Galveston Art League, a nonprofit organization established 106 years ago with a goal of promoting visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County area. The Art League and its downtown Galveston gallery are operated exclusively by volunteers, and the organization has never had a salaried employee.
The league is supported by contributions, an annual fall gala, and memberships at various levels, with an individual membership just $40 a year. GalvestonArtLeague.com offers detailed information about memberships; click on “Join” to learn more about memberships and on “Workshops” to check out the array of both trips and classes.
