DICKINSON ISD TOOK TIME to salute the Gators boys’ basketball team with a billboard north on 1-45 and FM 518 as a show of appreciation for a team that was unable to complete their dream season.
The Gators advanced to the Class 6A state Final Four in San Antonio but were denied the opportunity to play for the state championship as COVID-19 forced them to return home shortly after their arrival on March 12. Despite attempts from the UIL to set up an opportunity to play, Dickinson’s hopes were formally dashed in late April when it was announced that the spring sports schedule would be cancelled.
“These young men and coach Jason Wilson may proudly display their titles from this year: State Final Four Finalist, Regional Champions, Area Champions, Bi-District Champions and 24-6A Champions,” said the post on the Dickinson ISD Facebook page.
The Gators finished 32-5 overall, with Wilson receiving a host of Houston area and state coach of the year honors in guiding his team, which was ranked second in state and 14th nationally in MaxPreps.com’s final boys’ basketball poll.
Senior Tramon Mark, who will play at the University of Houston, was named the Guy V. Lewis award winner, which honors the top high school basketball player in the Greater Houston area. Mark also earned consensus all-state honors and was selected as part of MaxPrep.com’s All-America team.
Fellow senior Marcus Williams, who shared co-district MVP honors with Mark, is bound for Iowa State University after receiving numerous all-regional and all-state honors.
