Galveston Art League invites the public to attend two workshops early in the New Year: a papier Mache mask workshop on Jan. 4 and Jan. 11, and “Art Journal Discovery” on Jan. 7. Both low-cost workshops will be held in the Art League’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St., Galveston.

Papier Mache Workshop

Galveston Art League member Amy Slaughter will teach participants to create their own papier Mache Mardi Gras masks from noon until 4 p.m. on the first two Wednesdays of 2023.

On Jan. 4, workshop attendees will build their armature and cover it with layers of papier Mache. On Jan. 11, the attendees will paint their masks.

Slaughter urges participants to “bring your creativity with you and any recyclable item that would help your armature.” Those items may include water bottles, yogurt containers or Jell-O cups; corrugated cardboard; and/or toilet paper and paper towel tubes.

Attendees may display their finished masks in the Galveston Art League Gallery during the days leading up to Mardi Gras. Or they may take their masks home after the second session.

To reserve your place, preregister for this $50 class on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. Advance registration ensures that enough materials will be available for every participant.

Art Journal Discovery

Sharon Hendry will cover the fundamental principles of art journaling and how to use journaling to strengthen creativity. Hendry’s workshop is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.

She will teach techniques for backgrounds, collaging imagery and the use of text on journal pages. Hendry’s methods can later serve to spark creativity on other projects.

Cost of the journaling workshop is $50; students need to bring blank books and art supplies of their choice to the class. Register and pay with a credit card on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com
