LA MARQUE’S boys’ basketball team remains the only area team ranked in the
latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches weekly poll, as the Cougars (3-1)
are slotted in the 20th spot in the Class 4A rankings. After hosting Cleveland on
Tuesday night, the Coogs will take part in the Needville Tournament beginning
on Thursday.
*The one positive from the early playoff eliminations of high school football
teams is that players who were on the gridiron will quickly adapt to the hardwood.
Dickinson will have the size and athleticism of Jalen Wydermyer to bolster its
frontcourt, while La Marque’s bench will receive the presence of 3-point specialist
Justin Murray and defensive specialist Kobe Gatson.
Friendswood, which fell short of making the playoffs, was able to get the services
of Austin Alvarez and Zach Zamora, giving coach Cliff Owens added flexibility
to his roster.
*Galveston Ball alum and Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans joined
elite company on Sunday when he crossed the 1,000-yard mark in receptions
for a fifth straight season. He joined Hall of Famer Randy Moss (1998-2002) and
Bengals wideout A.J. Green (2011-2015) as the only other players to achieve the
accomplishment.
Evans is also on pace to become just the sixth player in league history to record
at least 6,000 receiving yards in his first five seasons. The list would include
former Rams Pro Bowler Torry Holt (1999-2003), Moss, Hall of Famer Jerry Rice,
Falcons All-Pro Julio Jones and Green.
*The return date for Texans running back D’Onta Foreman is closing in fast.
The Texas City native continues to make progress in practice and could make
his 2018 debut as early as Sunday’s home game against the Browns. Foreman
suffered an Achilles injury last November and still has a week left to be on the
physically unable to perform list. With the Texans moving closer to a possible
postseason run, the addition of Foreman will add depth to the ground game behind
Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue.
*According to ProFootballRumors.com, the Texans are expected to retain defensive
end/linebacker Jadeveon Clowney by applying their 2019 franchise tag
on him next March. Clowney is tagged at both positions on the team’s roster,
which means he could earn $15 million if the Texans view him as a linebacker
or $17 million if treated as a defensive end. One of the league’s most feared
pass rushers, Clowney could earn north of $20 million if he hits unrestricted free
agency.
