LOVE MAY BE IN THE AIR on Thursday, but keeping state championship dreams alive is a deeper love for those taking part in the state swimming and diving championships on Friday and Saturday. The regional finals in state high school wrestling are also part of the weekend, while the high school girls’ basketball playoffs move in the area round.
Wednesday: With the road to the state powerlifting finals looming, the girls’ teams of La Marque and Texas City will head to Goose Creek Memorial to take part in the Last Chance Qualifying Tournament beginning at 3:00pm.
The Rockets play their final regular season game before the All-Star Break when they visit the Timberwolves in a game televised by ESPN beginning at 7:00pm. Minnesota won the first meeting between the two when they claimed a 103-91 home victory on December 3. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will also have the game beginning with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
Thursday: Tournament time dominates the first weekend of the softball regular season, as Clear Brook and Clear Falls will be among the teams participating in the Brenham Tournament. Clear Creek, Friendswood and Santa Fe are each taking part in the NFCA Leadoff Tournament in College Station, while Dickinson is at the Goose Creek Memorial Tourney. Texas City will be in the Katy Tournament, while Hitchcock is part of the Rice ISD Tournament.
Clear Brook’s tennis team hits the road to Coppell to take part in a three-day tournament pitting them against a host of the best teams in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Friday: State championships are on the line in the UIL swimming and diving finals, which will be held at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the campus of the University of Texas. Friendswood will have one of the larger number of contenders as the Mustangs seek to capture the Class 5A crown, while Clear Brook, Clear Falls and Clear Springs will have a handful of performers vying for a chance to stand atop the medal podium.
High school wrestlers with state aspirations will be in Katy, as the regional meet will be held on Friday and Saturday, with the qualifiers from that event will head to Berry Center in Cypress for next weekend’s state finals.
Those teams that survived the bi-district round of the girls’ high school basketball playoffs. Clear Falls and Galveston Ball played on Monday night, while Clear Springs, Friendswood, Hitchcock and La Marque each played their opening round games on Tuesday night.
The day is dominated by baseball scrimmages. Hitchcock will have its second Red vs. White Scrimmage starting at 3:30pm. Brazosport at Galveston Ball, Clear Falls at Kingwood Park and Santa Fe at Pearland each start at 4:00pm, with Friendswood at La Porte getting underway at 4:30pm. Texas City at Clear Lake, St. Thomas at Clear Springs, Clear Brook at Dobie and Clear Creek at Kingwood are each 5:00pm starts.
In boys’ soccer, Dickinson at Alvin, Clear Springs at Clear Creek, Clear Brook at Clear Lake, Santa Fe at Crosby, Memorial at Galveston Ball, Baytown Lee at Friendswood and Texas City at Galena Park begin their matches at 7:30pm.
The girls’ soccer slate will have Friendswood at Baytown Lee, Clear Lake at Clear Brook, Clear Creek at Clear Springs, Alvin at Dickinson, Galveston Ball at Memorial, Crosby at Santa Fe and Galena Park at Texas City. Each match will start at 7:30pm.
Two softball games are on the schedule, as Galveston Ball at Aldine Nimitz begins at 6:00pm, followed by Fort Bend Willowridge at La Marque at 6:30pm.
The tennis schedule starts bright and early as Clear Springs visits Dickinson at 6:45am. Texas City’s teams will also be in action as the Stingarees take part in the Aldine Tournament.
In track and field, Clear Creek, Clear Falls, Clear Springs, Friendswood, La Marque and Texas City will all be in Pearland for the John Morris Oilers Invitational. Clear Brook will take part in the Brown Relays at Pasadena.
Clear Falls’ boys’ golf team will play at Bentwater Country Club in Montgomery.
Saturday: Santa Fe’s powerlifting teams will be at Splendora, while the day will also see La Marque’s baseball team visiting Needville at 2:00pm for their final scrimmage before the regular season opens. Galveston Ball’s boys’ track team will participate in the Spring Relays at Spring High School.
