TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL left little doubt on where the best prep gridiron talent resides, as 33 players were selected in last week’s National Football League draft. Seven of the first 45 selections came from the Houston area, an astonishing 15.5 percent.

While Galveston County did not contribute to the 2020 haul, the area’s talent base will help replenish NFL teams within the next few seasons. Following are five Galveston County high school alums who will have a chance to hear their name called:

  1. Jalen Wydermyer, TE, Texas A&M (Dickinson High School): Wydermyer caught 32 passes for 447 yards and six touchdowns during an impressive freshman season that saw him average 14 yards per catch. His name has already perked the ears of NFL scouts, whose interest will arise as soon as the 2022 draft, when Wydermyer will be eligible to turn pro.
  2. Chad Lindberg, OT, Georgia (Clear Creek): The Bulldogs beat out a host of national powerhouses to get Lindberg to commit. The 6-6, 325-pound Lindberg was ranked as the fifth-best offensive tackle in the Class of 2020 and is part of a program that has served as a finishing school for NFL teams. One recruiting outlet has already projected Lindberg as a Day 1 pick, a reality that could come as soon as 2024.
  3. Tyler Page, WR, SMU (Friendswood): James Proche took his 111 receptions to the NFL, leaving a huge void in the Mustangs’ passing game. This could open the door for Page to finally break out after catching 13 passes for 198 yards as a sophomore last season. Page’s speed and versatility could be on display this fall and could open the door to a stronger senior season that could help garner him NFL attention in the 2022 draft.
  4. Jordan Myers, TE, Rice (Dickinson): Myers has 46 career receptions in his three seasons with the Owls, and his versatility should lead to a bigger role this fall. At 6’2, 216, Myers will lack the size to play tight end on the next level, but his skills could translate into a role as a receiver, be it the NFL or up north in Canada.
  5. (Tie) Donovan Green TE and PJ Williams, OT, Dickinson: Ranked among the top high school prospects of the Class of 2022, both Green and Williams have spent their spring racking up offers from the nation’s elite programs. Green is regarded as the nation’s best prep tight end entering his junior season with the Gators, while Wiliams’ 6-4, 240-pound frame will have two more years under coach John Snelson to develop into a force that could also hear NFL commissioner Roger Goodell call his name.
