THE START OF THE NEW YEAR brings playoff implications for both the Cowboys and Texans, albeit for different reasons. The first week of 2021 also brings in a bounty of high school basketball and the start of high school soccer.
Sunday: Winners of three straight, the 6-9 Cowboys enter the final week of the regular season with a chance to win the NFC East. In order to pull off the improbable, they’ll have to defeat the rival Giants on the road when the teams kick off at 12:00pm. KRIV-26 will have the game live. Simply put, a Cowboys win — combined with a Washington Football Team loss to the Eagles Sunday night — puts Dallas in the NFC playoffs with a wild card game at home to boot.
The 4-11 Texans close out their regular season with a chance to be a postseason spoiler when they host the Titans at 3:25pm. Tennessee needs a win to gain one of the three remaining playoff spots in AFC, and a win over their AFC South rivals would be icing on the cake. KHOU-11 will have the game live.
Monday: The high school boys’ basketball schedule will have Galveston Ball at Baytown Sterling at 1:00pm, followed by Clear Falls at Clear Springs at 5:30pm.
The sole game on the girls’ high school hoops slate has Hempstead at state-ranked Hitchcock at 6:15pm.
The Rockets will welcome the rival Mavericks to Toyota Center for the first meeting this season between the teams. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm, leading into the tip shortly after 7:00pm.
Tuesday: In boys’ basketball, La Marque at Brazosport starts at 6:30pm, with Clear Falls at Clear Creek, Clear Springs at Dickinson, Baytown Sterling at Friendswood, Santa Fe at La Porte and Texas City at Goose Creek Memorial beginning at 7:00pm. Brazos at Hitchcock closes out the schedule at 7:30pm.
The girls’ basketball calendar has Goose Creek Memorial at Texas City beginnng at 12:30pm and Brazosport at La Marque at 6:30pm. Clear Creek at Clear Falls, Dickinson at Clear Springs, Friendswood at Baytown Sterling and La Porte at Santa Fe are each 7:00pm starts.
The first Tuesday of the 2020-21 high school boys’ soccer season will have Bay City at La Marque at 5:00pm, with Sharpstown at Texas City getting underway at 6:00pm. Santa Fe at Angleton starts at 7:00pm.
There’s girls’ high school soccer as well, with Clear Creek at Dawson at 7:00pm, followed by Clear Brook at Fort Bend Travis at 7:30pm.
