This competition was the first of three that Galveston Art League will hold this year. The other two are scheduled for June and September; rules and registration dates will be posted in an online prospectus about a month beforehand. The three annual juried contests are part of the league’s mission to promote artists, art education and visual arts in the county and beyond.
All of the Art League’s juried competitions allow artists to enter as many as three of their works; all must be executed within the past four years. They may enter in these categories: works on canvas and board, works on paper, photography, digital art (these works are either created via computer or are photographs that have been significantly altered using a computer), mixed-media wall-hung, and 3-D (sculpture, pottery, art dolls, wood carvings, metalwork, etc.). Artists older than 15, both Art League members and nonmembers, may enter Art League competitions.
The 108-year-old nonprofit Galveston Art League has never had salaried employees; all work is carried out by volunteers. The league’s outreach includes adult and children’s workshops that are open to the public; gallery and online exhibits/sales of regional artists’ works that change monthly; promotion of local artists via the league’s Featured Artist program; and participation in ArtWalks.
Galveston Art League largely finances its activities through tax-deductible memberships and contributions, gallery sales, and an annual gala. To join (the league welcomes non-artists as patron members) or find out more about the league, visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com or send an email to gallery2117@gmail.com. Artist members enjoy discounted entry fees to juried competitions, and all members receive a quarterly electronic newsletter with local art news, monthly preview parties to view new exhibits, rubbing elbows with artists, and early notification about league-hosted workshops, which have limited enrollment.
