It’s common knowledge that avoiding things such as smoking and overexposure to the sun are key factors in maintaining healthy skin.  However, diet, exercise and mental health also play a large role in how your skin looks and feels.

Let’s start with what you eat. There are several foods that aid in healthy skin listed are just a few that are common and easily accessible:

  • Beta carotene — beta-carotene converts into vitamin A (retinol). Taking big doses of vitamin A can be toxic, and the American Heart Association recommends getting your source of beta carotene from fresh foods rather than supplements of frozen foods. Think carrots, winter squash, apricots and spinach.
  • Green tea — A 2018 study showed major polyphenolic compound present in green tea. Polyphenolic is a beneficial plant compound with antioxidant properties. EGCG is the compound found in green tea that has a wide range of therapeutic properties.
  • Vitamin C — Vitamin C is needed for collagen synthesis, which supports skin integrity as you age. Vitamin C also helps to smooth and firm the surface of the skin by activating cells, called fibroblasts, which stimulate new collagen. A diet rich in vitamin C is associated with improved skin elasticity, fewer wrinkles and a softer and more even skin tone.  Citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, broccoli and tomatoes are great sources for vitamin C.

Exercise

Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin.  While exercising, you are increasing blood flow which helps carry away waste products from working cells, including free radicals. Exercise will help flush out cellular debris from your system.

Stress management

Healthy state of mind = healthy skin. Getting enough sleep, setting reasonable limits on your to-do list and making time to do the things you enjoy.  How you handle stress affects many health-related concerns, and your skin is no exception.

Food, exercise and mental well being play a huge role in how your skin looks and feels.  As the largest organ on the body, you’ll want to ensure it’s in good health!
