Galveston to Receive New Ferry; TxDOT to Continue Addressing Ferry Shortage

(Austin, TX) – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced that by this
weekend, there will be four ferries in operation along the Galveston-Port Bolivar route.
For the last several months, TxDOT has only operated two ferries in Galveston Bay, as the other
two were docked for winter repairs. As of Monday, February 27, three ferries were operating, and
a fourth will be up and running by the end of this week.
Even though TxDOT is ramping up ferry capacity, unseasonably warm temperatures have created
high traffic on the ferries. Therefore, the agency is warning passengers to expect delays and asking
that they potentially seek alternative routes.
“The Galveston Bay Ferry is a vital transportation artery, not just for everyday passengers, but for
people who are experiencing medical emergencies.” Rep. Leo-Wilson said. “We must have our
transportation services up and running to maintain daily life in the district.”
TxDOT and Rep. Leo-Wilson encourage residents to follow the Galveston Ferry on Twitter at
@galvestonferry to get the latest updates on times and waits throughout the day.
