A TIGHT SQUEEZE FOR TCISD

TEXAS CITY – Because the damage is far too extensive
to return to La Marque Elementary School, La
Marque Middle School and La Marque Primary School,
Texas City ISD is leasing portable buildings for the
remainder of the 2017-18 school year.
In late August, wind driven rain and flooding due to
Hurricane Harvey left three La Marque schools damaged
and not serviceable for school. In September,
1,600 students were divided between six other TCISD
campuses.
“We initially thought the building could be remediated
and repaired so that students could return within a short
period of time,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Rodney Cavness. “However, more extensive damage to
the building was uncovered during the remediation process,
and at this time it is unclear when or if students
will ever return to those buildings.”
In order to alleviate overcrowding at the Texas City
elementary schools for the remainder of this school
year, the district has decided to put portable buildings
at Heights and Guajardo elementary schools. “We
realize the relocation has been inconvenient for our
families, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation,”
said Cavness. “I want to emphasize that this is a temporary
situation. The goal is to have students back in La
Marque for the 2018-2019 school year.”
Over the Christmas holidays, TCISD Maintenance
will continue to set up portable buildings at Heights and
Guajardo. The district will notify elementary student
families with details in January how and if any moves
impact them.
“We know it has been a struggle this year relocating
to a new campus,” said Cavness. “We cannot tell you
how grateful we are for our TCISD families’ continued
patience and support.”
