WELCOME TO THIS YEAR’S FOOD FROM THE BAR

Food from the Bar is a month-long competition among Galveston County law
firms. During the month of competition the participating law firms earn points
by donating food, funds and volunteer time to benefit the Galveston County
Food Bank.
Through donations and support, the legal community helps Galveston County
Food Bank feed more kids and families in Galveston County. The event is timed
to raise much needed resources to support the summer Kidz Packz program.
Last year the Kidz Packz summer program provided over 9,000 Kidz Packz to
children whose families struggle to provide that extra food during the summer
months. Food from the Bar is helping close that gap!
The Food Bank Today
The role of the Galveston County Food Bank is to feed hungry people. This
mission has become critical to food distribution in Galveston County in light of
the growing need for food assistance. One of the greatest challenges facing
economically disadvantaged people is accessing and purchasing nutritional
food. Although food is plentiful in the United States, the challenge for social
service organizations dedicated to helping hungry people lies in the logistics of
securing, transporting, storing and distributing the food. Through the Galveston
County Food Bank system, Galveston County has access to allocated USDA
food as well as donated, salvaged and reclamated food, cleaning supplies and
personal hygiene products from manufacturers and retail distributors. The Food
Bank warehouses bulk quantities of fresh, frozen, canned and dry food products
in readiness for distribution to partnering agencies throughout Galveston
County, distributing about 6.7 million pounds of food each year.
Children’s Nutritional Outreach
KiDz Pacz
Kidz Pacz is a program established by the
Galveston County Food Bank to provide a
nutritious food resource for children when
they are most at risk of food insecurity. It is
modeled after Feeding America’s successful
Backpack Buddy program that operates
throughout the school year to provide weekend
food packs for children identified by school personnel as lacking food during
these short periods. When school lets out for the summer, many children
no longer have access to not only Backpack Buddies, but to the free/reduced
meals provided at school. For families living on tight budgets, putting nutritious
food on the table can be a struggle during the long summer months.
In response, the Food Bank provides weekly Kidz Pacz to bridge this summer
gap. Each pack contains food that is rich in nutrients, requires little or no
preparation and can be easily opened and consumed by a child.
Additional Assistance
The National School Lunch Program was established to provide nutritionally
balanced, free lunches to children from families with incomes at or below 130
percent of the poverty level, roughly $29,965 for a family of four. Those families
of children with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty
level or $40,793 are eligible for reduced-price meals, for which children can be
charged no more than 40 cents. To contact your child’s school and apply for the
National School Lunch Program please click here.
