WHILE THE ACTION is being handled by the area pros, the efforts of the
area’s high school athletes continue to be celebrated as the new week begins.
TODAY, SUNDAY: Coming off a 14-strikeout peformance against the Yankees
on Tuesday, Justin Verlander (4-0, 1.19 ERA) takes the mound for the Astros
in the finale of their weekend series at the Diamondbacks starting at 3:10pm.
Verlander did not get the decision in the 4-0 loss to New York, marking the first
time Houston lost a game he pitched in since his arrival last September. Matt
Koch (1-0, 2.37 ERA) gets the nod for Arizona. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest
starts its coverage at 2:30pm with the pregame show.
Game four of the Western Conference semifinals starts at 7:00pm as the
Rockets visit the Jazz. The teams split the first two games of the series leading
into Friday night’s game three in Salt Lake City. TNT will have the national coverage
of the contest that will either see Houston or Utah take a commanding
3-1 lead or turning matters into a best-of-three.
TOMORROW, MONDAY: Texas City High School’s tennis team will hold its annual
banquet in the Captain’s Room at Nessler Center beginning at 6:00pm.
Santa Fe’s baseball team will take time from its playoff run to hold its annual
banquet, which will be held at Santa Fe High School beginning at 6:30pm.
The Astros’ western swing takes them to Oakland, where Dallas Keuchel (1-5,
3.98 ERA) gets the call for Houston in the opener of the three-game set that
starts at 9:10pm. Keuchel lost his previous start against the Athletics when he
gave up seven hits and six earned runs over seven innings in an 8-1 defeat on
April 27. As of Saturday, the Athletics had not announced their starting pitcher.
AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin its coverage at 8:30pm with the pregame
show.
TUESDAY: The boys and girls golf teams of Friendswood High School will
hold their annual banquet at Golfcrest Country Club in Pearland. The event will
begin at 6:30pm.
Game five of the Western Conference semifinals returns to Toyota Center
where the Rockets host the Jazz beginning at 7:00pm. Depending on the
outcome of the games played on Friday and Sunday, this could be a closeout
contest or a game that pushes either Houston or Utah to the brink of elimination
should a game six on Thursday night in Salt Lake City is needed. TNT will
be airing the game nationally.
Houston sports fans could be in for a long night, especially if they tune into
AT&T Sportsnet Southwest’s coverage of the Astros-Athletics. Following the
pregame show at 8:30pm, two of the American League’s top young pitchers
face off when Houston’s Lance McCullers Jr. (4-1, 3.73 ERA) takes on
Oakland’s Sean Manaea (4-3, 1.63 ERA) at 9:10pm. Both hurlers can claim a
victory against the other’s team as McCullers defeated the Athletics at Minute
Maid Park on April 28, a day after Manaea toppled the Astros.
