CLOSURE IS THE theme for the first week of February, with the Super Bowl wrapping up the NFL season while the high school girls’ basketball regular season will mean the end for those schools that failed to make the playoffs. However, hope does spring eternal for both baseball and softball as the two sports remain in scrimmage mode before the games count for real.
Sunday: They’re playing the Super Bowl today, as the Patriots seek a sixth Lombardi Trophy at the expense of the Saints Rams. There is local appeal to this game, with Texas City’s Diron Talbert (1967-70) and La Marque’s Claude Terrell (2005-07) having played with Los Angeles/St. Louis. Former Stingarees star Vernon Crawford played three seasons with the Patriots (1997-99) while Cougars alum Greg Randall was a starting offensive lineman when New England won its first Super Bowl championship exactly 17 years ago on Sunday against…the Rams.
Those preferring to avoid the endless pregame show can flip it on KHOU11 shortly before the 5:30pm kickoff.
