Long Time Rotary Members Honored at Mardi Gras Parade

Chris Delesandri, Roy Green, Ava Sloan, Peggy O’Brien Davenport –  all names long associated with community service – will be honored during Mardi Gras festivities this coming Saturday, February 16. Delesandri and Davenport selected to represent the Texas City Rotary, chose as their charity, Gulf Coast MHMR. The Gulf Coast Center is one of thirty-nine community centers in the state of Texas providing services, programs and employment assistance for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), mental illness,  HIV or needing substance abuse recovery services. Programs and services offered by the Gulf Coast Center have made progress toward enabling and empowering individuals and their families to live quality lives. Delesandri is a familiar face around Texas City, especially with young people looking to receive training for employment and other of our citizens that find themselves in need of assistance during difficult times. As Executive Director of United Way Galveston County, serving on numerous boards such as the Texas City Day Nursery, active with both the Chamber and Rotary, Delesandri has his hand on the pulse of this city, from its most needy to its most giving. Peggy Davenport is quite simply a ray of sunshine everywhere she goes…and she goes a lot! As a multiple Paul Harris and Herb Langford Fellow, Peggy also gives greatly of her time working with Junior Rotarians, Veterans, National Adoption Day, Foundation for The Future Scholarships and Mardi Gras of course.
Green and Sloan were chosen to represent the League City Rotary and their charity is the Galveston County Mobile Food Bank which provides weekly, monthly, bi-weekly food distribution, via refrigerated tractor-trailer unit, to communities throughout Galveston County. Roy Green has been in the hotel business for over 32 years and with South Shore Harbour Resort for twenty of those years. An eighteen-year member of Rotary, Green has served on the Rotary Texas Advisory Board, is currently serving on the United Way Galveston County Board, and has served on numerous other boards as well as being an active member of the League City Chamber of Commerce. An associate with Rodin consulting Group, Ava Sloan is a past President of the League City Rotary and serves as this year’s Foundation President. She too is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow is active in Toastmaster’s International and volunteers with Interfaith Caring Ministries, the American Heart Association and Clear Creek Community Theatre.
However this coming Saturday, February 16,  they will all four be tossing beads and goodies from their respective floats during the Mardi Gras Parade. The parade travels for is three miles and begins at 3300 Magnolia Avenue traveling from 29th Street to 6th Street. Participation is free and attendance is wildly encouraged. The parade begins at 12 noon.
