Ball, Texas City well represented on 22-5A boys hoops teams
BOTH GALVESTON BALL and Texas City dominated the District 22-5A boys basketball awards, as
Ball’s Nigel Green received the defensive player of the year award and fellow teammate Darion
Henry was selected as the district’s top newcomer. Meanwhile, Chris Mason of the Stingarees
was named coach of the year while Dayton Booker was tabbed as the district’s most valuable
player for helping guide the Stings to a 31-7 record and the program’s first outright district title
since 2004.
Joining Booker, Green and Henry on the first team were Jakeenan Davis and Montrel Motton of
Baytown Lee, Jaylen Herman and Kaleb Stewart (who was named offensive player of the year)
of Crosby, Caden McKenzie of Texas City, Ian Bivins of Friendswood and Giovanni Janke of
Galveston Ball.
Those making the second team were Caleb Bernardez of Crosby, Jacolby Belle, Leon Joubert
and Phillip McDaniel of Texas City, Julian Macias of Galena Park, Tyler Polzin and Nehemiah
Noel of Galveston Ball, Hudson Bockart and Thomas Hamre of Friendswood, Santa Fe’s Aaron
Dazey, Dayjon Coleman of Goose Creek Memorial and Adrian Boston of Baytown Lee.
Honorable mentions were handed to Sam Bradford, Emerson Haywood and Zyan St. Brice of
Goose Creek Memorial, Deniquez Dunn and Kion Gonzales of Crosby, Texas City’s Terrell
Mitchell and Nairobi Watson, Cole Kelly, Gracen McGregor and Renyck Robertson of
Friendswood, Santa Fe’s Ethan Findle, Jaden Hilliard and Austin Lamb, Elijah Courtney and Terry
Webb of Galveston Ball, Deiondre Fonseca and Isaiah Sanchez of Galena Park and Baytown
Lee’s Paci Cantu and Jullian Laubach.
