Area tennis players seek to start racket at state finals
WHILE THE TOUCHDOWNS WON’T COUNT, the week offers two opportunities to see potential
2019 high school football stars hit the field. There will also be the opportunity for state
championships coming home to Galveston County, as a number of talented young men and
women compete in the state tennis finals.
Wednesday: Are you ready for some football? If the answer is “yes!” then find your way to Sam
Vitanza Stadium for the Dickinson Spring Game, which begins at 4:30pm. The Blue vs. White
contest will wrap up spring practice for the Gators, who will look to return to the postseason for
seventh straight season.
Texas City High School will have both its baseball and softball banquets, with each beginning at
6:00pm. The baseball banquet will be held at Doyle Center, while the softball banquet will be
held at the Showboat Pavillion.
Justin Verlander (6-1, 2.51 ERA) pitches against his old team for the second time in his career
when he takes the mound for the Astros against Tigers hurler Tyson Ross (1-5, 6.11 ERA)
beginning at 6:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start the evening’s coverage with the
pregame show at 5:30pm.
Thursday: The area will be well-represented at the state high school tennis championships,
which will be held today and Friday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and Omar Smith
Intramural Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station. Clear
Creek’s Carter Crookston will compete in the 6A boys’ singles, while Allison Schwartz of Clear
Springs will be part of the 6A girls’ singles bracket. Friendswood’s boys’ doubles team of Race
Haas and Noah Smistad will chase state gold in the 5A bracket, with the Mustangs’ duo of
Quinn Radtke and Maura Mitchell will be in the 5A girls’ doubles bracket.
After weather postponed matters last Thursday, the Blocker Middle School’s seventh and
eighth grade soccer teams will take on Alvin Junior High School. The seventh and eighth grade
boys will be at Alvin for games beginning at 5:00pm and 6:15pm, while the Blocker seventh and
eighth grade girls will play host to Alvin at the TCHS Auxiliary Field at 5:00pm and 6:15pm.
Friday: The past two World Series champions collide for the first time this season when Gerrit
Cole (4-4, 3.88 ERA) goes for the Astros against host Red Sox pitcher Rick Porcello (3-3, 5.15
ERA). AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start coverage with the pregame show at 5:30pm that
leads into game time at 6:10pm.
Saturday: The weekend offers another dose of football as Hitchcock High School hosts a 7on7
qualifier beginning at 10:00am. The Division II tourney will produce just one team that will be
assured of playing in the 7on7 state tourney, which will be held in College Station June 27-29.
Rookie Corbin Martin (1-0, 3.38 ERA) will make his second career start for the Astros in the
middle game of the weekend set at the Red Sox, who have yet to announce their starter. The
game will televised nationally on Fox26 (no AT&T Sportsnet Southwest tonight) beginning at
