THE WEEKEND BEFORE THANKSGIVING offers a full plate of sports, with Friendswood’s bid for a state volleyball title being the main dish.
Wednesday: A pair of wrestling meets highlight the high school sports schedule as Clear Falls is at Cy Ranch and Clear Springs takes part in a tri-meet that includes Clear Creek and Episcopal. Both meets begin at 5:00pm.
The Rockets open a brief two-game road trip when they visit the Nuggets. Houston came into the week having won seven straight games and 10 of their last 12 after an opening night loss to the Bucks. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the game at 8:00pm, with the pregame show starting at 7:30pm.
Thursday: Four area high school basketball teams will be part of the McDonald’s Texas Invitational, which will run through Saturday in Pasadena. On the boys’ side, state-ranked Dickinson and Clear Creek will represent the area, while the girls’ teams of Clear Falls and Clear Springs will also participate.
In other high school basketball tournament play, Clear Brook, Clear Creek and Friendswood will each be part of the girls’ bracket at the Fort Bend ISD Tournament. La Marque is at the San Marcos ISD Tournament and Santa Fe is competing at the Nederland Tourney.
Clear Brook’s wrestling team will be in action at Katy Taylor beginning at 5:00pm.
Friday: The area will all be Mustangs fans at 1:00pm when Friendswood’s volleyball team meets Lucas Lovejoy in the state Class 5A semifinals at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland. The Mustangs are making their 10th trip to the state’s Final Four and their first appearance since 2013. A victory by Friendswood would give them the chance to play the winner of the Canyon Randall-San Antonio Alamo Heights match for the state championship Saturday at 3:00pm.
In boys’ basketball, Terry at Clear Falls tips off at 6:00pm, followed by Galveston Ball at Clear Brook and Sharpstown at La Marque at 7:00pm. Victoria East at Santa Fe tips off at 7:30pm.
Texas City hosts its annual Turkey Bowl swim meet at Doyle Natatorium beginning at 9:00am. In other swimming/diving action, Clear Brook, Clear Falls and Clear Springs are in Conroe at the TISCA Meet that will run through Saturday.
In golf, Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Clear Springs are among the teams taking part in the 6A Regional Preview at Eagle Pointe Country Club.
The high school wrestling slate will have Clear Creek and Clear Springs are among the teams participating in the Cy Ridge meet.
The Rockets will conclude their brief road swing when they visit the Clippers for a 9:30pm tip that will televised nationally on ESPN.
Saturday: More high school wrestling highlights the day with Clear Brook hosting a quad meet that begins at 8:00am. Clear Falls will be part of the Cougar duals starting at 9:00am.
And then there were two: Dickinson, Friendswood county’s sole bi-district survivors
GALVESTON COUNTY WENT a disappointing 2-5 in the bi-district round, as Clear Creek, Clear Falls, Clear Springs, Hitchcock and La Marque all saw their 2019 high school football seasons end. That leaves just Dickinson and Friendswood alive in the area round, with both facing huge tasks on Saturday.
Thursday: The football weekend begins with Stephen F. Austin visiting Northwestern State at 6:00pm.
Week 12 of the NFL season kicks off with the Texans hosting the Colts with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the AFC South. Both Fox 26 and NFL Network will have the game live at 7:20pm.
Friday: No area teams are in action.
Saturday: Galveston County’s last two teams are together for a double-header at NRG Stadium. Dickinson (10-1) takes on Atascocita (10-1) in a 6A, Region III, Division I area round game beginning at 2:00pm. The winners of this game take on the winners of the Cypress Falls (10-1)-Katy Tompkins (10-1) clash, which will be played at Katy’s Legacy Stadium on Friday night.
Following the conclusion of the Dickinson-Atascocita game, Friendswood (9-2) takes on Cedar Park (10-1) at 6:00pm in a 5A, Region III, Division I area round contest. The winners of this game will advance to face the winners of the Manor (6-5)-New Caney Porter (10-1) tilt.
In college football, Texas Southern at Arkansas-Pine Bluff starts at 1:00pm, followed by Houston Baptist at Sam Houston State at 2:00pm. Texas, ranked 19th, meets 23rd-ranked Baylor (FS1), Texas A&M visits #4 Georgia (KHOU 11) and North Texas at Rice (NFL Network) are each 2:30pm starts.
McNeese at Lamar (ESPN3) starts at 3:00pm, with Houston at Tulsa (ESPNU) ending the day’s play at 6:30pm.
